Being a mother of a special needs child can be an incredibly challenging journey, often leaving little time for oneself. As moms, we may feel overwhelmed, and exhausted, and neglect our own well-being. However, I have come to realize the important significance of self-care in maintaining a balanced and healthy life, both mentally and physically. In this blog post, I want to share my personal journey as a special needs parent and the reasons behind creating “Break & Breathe,” a retreat designed to empower and support mothers like you and me. Read on to learn more about self-care for moms of special needs children.
The Importance of Self-Care
As a parent of a special needs child, it’s easy to put all our focus and energy into caring for our child’s needs, but neglecting our own can lead to emotional struggles and even physical health issues. After battling bouts of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks, I realized that taking care of my mental health, physical well-being, and inner spirit was essential for me to be the best version of myself for my child and others around me.
Understanding Self-Care:
Self-care doesn’t necessarily mean indulging in luxuries like spa treatments or pampering ourselves, although those are undoubtedly enjoyable aspects. It goes deeper than that. Our bodies and minds often send us signals when something is amiss, and ignoring those signs can lead to adverse consequences. Embracing self-care allows us to connect with ourselves on a profound level, bringing clarity and a renewed sense of purpose.
Discovering My Identity Beyond Motherhood:
As a special needs mom, I initially identified myself solely through that role. However, I came to realize that I am much more than just a mother to an autistic child. I am a woman with dreams, aspirations, relationships, and a purpose beyond my role as a caregiver. Recognizing this was not only empowering for me but also had a positive impact on my child.
Introducing Break & Breathe:
At the beginning of 2022, I faced a challenging period when I broke my ankle, which led to a colon cancer diagnosis within three months. During my recovery, I had a profound realization of the true significance of self-care. Inspired by my own journey, I created “Break & Breathe,” a retreat designed specifically for warrior moms like me.
“Break & Breathe, take a break before you break” is a very special weekend retreat where we learn valuable self-care tools, create connections with other women facing similar challenges, and provide support to one another. I created this retreat not only for other moms like me but also for myself and, most importantly, for my daughter.
The metaphor of applying our own oxygen mask before assisting others resonates deeply with me. As mothers, we often put the needs of our children before our own, but neglecting ourselves can have detrimental consequences. By prioritizing self-care, we become better equipped to support and care for our special needs children, ensuring we are emotionally and physically prepared for the journey ahead.
Why Break & Breathe:
As a mother of a special needs child, I understand our daily unique challenges. Through my personal journey, I’ve learned that self-care is not selfish; it is a necessary aspect of being the best version of ourselves for our children and loved ones. “Break & Breathe” is my way of encouraging all warrior moms to take that much-needed self-care break, connect with others, and rediscover their strength and purpose. Together, we can navigate this journey with resilience, compassion, and love for our children and ourselves.
