Sacred Space Design

Your Sacred Space

Most of us strive to make our homes feel comfortable and welcoming to provide the space for cultivating happiness and creating shared memories with our loved ones. However, we often overlook giving the same care and attention to creating space for ourselves.

I encourage you to shift your thinking beyond just making your home a comfortable space for your outer self to also making it a calming and a nurturing retreat for your inner life as well.

Our inner life can be defined as the thoughts, emotions, feelings and intentions that occupy our minds when we’re alone with ourselves. Our inner life needs just as much care and attention when it comes to creating comfort in our living spaces.

A sacred space is a special area in your home, backyard or patio that you can go to release stress and tune into yourself. It is a space for just ‘Being’. A place to reflect, read, journal, unwind and breathe… a place just for you.

Why do We need a Sacred Space?

A sacred space can assist us in feeling grounded. It can allow for us to  go within our thoughts and feelings and help to recharge our batteries when we are feeling drained or overwhelmed. A  sacred space does not have to be related to religion or a religious practice. While it actually can deepen your spirituality through prayer and meditation;  it can simply just be a place to spend time with YOU.

Creating a Sacred Space

Sacred spaces can be anywhere you want it to be.  It can be in a small corner of a room or outside in a patio garden. It can be minimal or it can be complex. It’s your space so you can create it to be whatever reflects your personal taste. The most important thing is that it feels like it is your own and that it’s quiet, comforting, relaxing and calming. If you need to, apply earphones or earplugs to assist in quieting the background noise. If you can sit close to the ground, even better because it will keep you grounded.

The Five Senses- Creating Your Space

1. Sight–Clearing The Area: Clear the space from clutter, visual distractions, audio pollution and anything that would fill it with negative energy.

2.  Sound- A Quiet Place: Your sacred space is a place that you do nothing but meditate, pray or just reflect/contemplate, write, daydream, etc…  Don’t answer emails or calls, use the internet, or watch TV in this area.

3.  Touch- Comfort: A soft blanket, comfortable pillow or shag throw rug.

4.  Smell-Using Aromatics: Use aromatherapy, essential oils and incense to clear negative energy, bring about a positive mental state, center your mind and let go of distractions.

5. Taste- Hydrate: Make sure are keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water
